| LESSON 12 | DECEMBER 24, 2011 KISLEV 28, 5772 |
Malik was trying to rear his daughter the best way he could. This morning was a disaster. After picking her up from the daycare, his daughter Jayla had the most terrible attitude. Her mouth got her in trouble as Malik drove them home. Malik was getting the things out of the car. Jayla was in the kitchen, waiting for her usual snack. The daycare gave her lunch, but the ice cream bar Daddy gave her after school was what she was waiting on. Malik knew this was the moment to try something new with Jayla.
Exodus 20:12 Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.
Children have to be trained how to act. Children want their way, and parents have to be strong and disciplined enough to train their children to obey them. One method is to (1) say it, (2) turn your back (3) and walk away. The Bible teaches us to train children. With correct use of punishments and rewards, most children will grow into mature adults. This lesson admonishes us to train our children, and gives tips on how to train them.
Children need adult training. — Proverbs 22:6
Children need the Word of God. — Deuteronomy 6:1-9, 2 Timothy 3:15
Parenting Tool 1: Say it, Turn and Walk Away Method
This come from the book, "Have a New Kid by Friday", by Dr. Kevin Leman. How it works is to say what you are going to do ONCE. Then turn and go about with your day. The child will come asking why, and basically try to get their way. But, you stick to your word, and tell them why you are doing what you are doing.
For example, Johnny (14) wants to go to the store to get a new shirt, but he came home later than he was supposed to yesterday afternoon. You tell Johnny that you will not take him to the store today, then turn around and continue with your day. Johnny WILL hunt you down to try to change your mind. You remind him that he came home late, and that you will take him only after he respects your wishes. You will see a transformation in most children. You have to be patient and strong with this method.
Finish Malik’s case in the introduction. How would you handle the situation?
